The narrative describes the memories and reflections of a middle-aged man whose health crisis recalls to him memories of his mother's passing, his post-college girlfriend, and a lot else, including his fondness for pets and art.
One thing all university disciplines share is an ethos of "new work." The undergraduate is not expected to generate new knowledge, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't move in that direction. A term that captures this expectation is insight and this book argues (demonstrates, with pedagogy) that first-year college students, or anyone really, can cultivate a feel for real writing.
The poems in this volume address the topics of animals and time.
